Gary Payton is a former professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was born on July 23, 1968, in Oakland, California, United States. Payton is widely regarded as one of the greatest point guards in NBA history and is particularly known for his exceptional defensive skills. Payton played college basketball at Oregon State University before entering the NBA. He was selected by the Seattle SuperSonics with the second overall pick in the 1990 NBA Draft. Payton spent the majority of his career with the SuperSonics, where he established himself as one of the league's premier guards. Nicknamed "The Glove" for his defensive prowess, Gary Payton was a nine-time NBA All-Star and a nine-time member of the NBA All-Defensive First Team. He won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award in 1996, becoming the first point guard to receive that honor in over a decade. Payton played 13 seasons with the Seattle SuperSonics, and during his tenure, he led the team to the NBA Finals in 1996, where they lost to the Chicago Bulls. He later played for several other teams, including the Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, and Miami Heat. In 2006, he won his first and only NBA championship as a member of the Miami Heat.
